A SATIRICAL sign condemning McDonald's has appeared next to the chain's Oxford store in Cornmarket Street.

The sign, which was made by mysterious street artist 'A34', uses the fast food restaurant's 'Happy Meal' and 'Lovin' it' branding to suggest it should not be using unsustainable palm oil.

Oxford Mail:

A34, who wishes to remain anonymous, has done a number of stunts around the city before, perhaps most notably through a series of 'street signs' across city, which prompted discussion about social media.

A34: Oxford's street artist's Brexit pieces

Discussing his latest work, A34 told the Oxford Mail: "It is satirical, but the subject matter is so important. The environment is everybody's responsibility, including you, me and the large corporations. We've all got to work together going forwards, with more transparency on all side.

"If my poster keeps the conversation going about palm oil versus sustainable palm oil, then that is my purpose. We all need to be more vocal about such a deadly serious topic, before it's too late."

The sign follows a recent protest in the same street which hit out at Oreo's use of palm oil, a substance which has been blamed for mass deforestation and ruining wildlife habitat.

The artist continued: "I don't want to be seen as only picking on McDonald's: they are just one of many large corporations whose fingerprints are alleged to be all over the deforestation issue."

McDonald's did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

However, the company's website says: "Our goal is for 100% of the palm oil used in our restaurants and as ingredients in our products to support the production of sustainable palm oil by 2020. It’s a complex issue and we rely on platforms like the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil to help increase the scale of our efforts."
