Letter to the editor
AN UNDERWEAR protest took place in Oxford City Centre, with young women demanding their ‘right’ to wear their underwear in public: at night, even after lots of lovely alcohol has been consumed by themselves and their peers (Oxford Mail, November 26).
Saintly behaviour by young men fortified with alcohol is rare. But young women publicly exposing their underwear is like walking through a lion’s den carrying lots of fresh meat and being surprised when the young lions bite you.
These young women demand the ‘right’ to parade their underwear to all and sundry, but they do not want to take any responsibility for the unwelcome and unchivalrous attention their appearance could so easily ignite.
Underwear is called underwear for a specific reason.
I am sure that many young women are opposed to the trend for women to expose their lingerie in public. Surely our young women can enjoy a night of dancing and celebration without feeling compelled to sexualise their underwear. Our young people need to be more responsible and treat themselves with a greater degree of decorum.
