A BIZARRE assault in which an elderly woman was struck by a tub of butter has provoked outrage among Oxford Mail readers.

The victim, 74, sustained swelling and severe bruising to her lip when a queue-jumper threw the butter at her at around 12.40pm on Sunday, October 21, at the Co-op supermarket in Eynsham High Street.

The woman was queueing when the offender pushed in front of her.

She told the man there was a queue, resulting in him throwing the butter.

The Co-op declined to comment but gave police a CCTV image of a man officers would like to speak to in relation to the assault.

Police are yet to confirm if they are still looking for the man in the picture, or whether any arrests have been made.

Despite the opportunity to poke fun and suggest puns for such an unusual crime, some readers, such as Kenner5, reminded everyone of the incident’s severity in our comments section.

He said: “I doubt whether the recipient of the attack, which is what it was, finds it amusing. Odd how we forget the seriousness of the matter just to get our name in print.”

On Facebook, Alan Green, wrote: “That’s like throwing a brick at someone when cold.. What a loser.”

Marie Cooper added: “His behaviour is disgusting, the poor lady must have been very shaken.”
