THE organiser of a town's fireworks display has unleashed an extraordinary rant against 'freeloaders' who managed to watch the event without paying.

In a Facebook post, that has since been deleted, Didcot Pyromusical Fireworks slammed those watching from viewing points outside of the main area on Sunday night.

It said the event had barely covered its costs due to people 'taking advantage' and 'not being supportive' and is now unlikely to return next year.

Karl Mitchell-Shead of Illusion Fireworks, which co-organised the display, said the company was not commenting on the tirade.

Thousands attended Didcot Town Football Club on Sunday night as fireworks were set to music.

Tickets cost £5 with under 10s let in free and also featured other entertainment including a bouncy castle and stalls.

Organisers thanked those who had supported the event but said not enough had paid the 'measly' entry fee.

In the post, those watching from a nearby hill were called 'disrespectful' and said to be 'taking the p*ss'.

It added: "It's been a great three years and it's clear many thousands of you come out to see the fireworks but as happened so many times in the past in this community, a lack of support means you lost yet another town event."

Hundreds have reacted to the post, with several saying a few people had 'ruined it for everyone.'

But others have defended the so-called 'freeloaders', saying they may have had to watch from far away because of health or financial difficulties.

One woman said her daughter has a condition where sudden loud noises can give her physical pain - hence having to watch from afar.

Some joked that they now owed money, having caught a glimpse of the fireworks from their homes, while other residents said they should be made donation only in a similar model to that used in nearby Wallingford.
