DRIVERS were given the chance to get connected with the growing market for electric vehicles.

Octopus Electric Vehicles presented The Electric Vehicle Discovery Experience in Bonn Square.

Some of the most popular electric cars on the market were on show, including the Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, Jaguar I-PACE, Renault ZOE, Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X.

Dinara Mukhametianova, of Octopus, was in the square on Saturday to advise potential customers.

Spokeswoman Rebecca Farquhar said: “It was a busy day in Bonn Square and there was a lot of interest from drivers who wanted to find out about switching to electric vehicles.

“Sales staff are now following up more than 100 leads.

“Electric vehicles can now travel much longer distances and that makes them much more attractive to drivers.”

Octopus Electric Vehicles brings together offers to buy or lease, and then run, the world’s best electric vehicles.

Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council are proposing to introduce the world’s first Zero Emission Zone in Oxford city centre to cut down on harmful vehicle emissions.

The proposal would see diesel and petrol vehicles banned from Oxford city centre in phases, starting with some vehicle types and a small number of streets in 2020, and - as vehicle technology develops - moving to all vehicle types across the whole city centre in 2035.

The ZEZ proposals would cut the nitrogen dioxide level in the city centre’s most polluted street, George Street, by 74 per cent by 2035, bringing it well below the legal limit.

There are now more than a million electric cars in Europe after sales soared by more than 40 per cent in the first half of the year.

The UK sold 30,040 plug-in cars and vans in the first half of the year.
