Youngsters strutted their stuff at a talent show in Blackbird Leys - and promised that next year's event would be bigger and bolder.

The Summer with Showtime extravaganza provided an opportunity for gifted youngsters to dance their hearts out in front of the estate.

Spectators at Saturday's show were treated to three performances from the Showtime Girls - a 10-strong troupe of dancers aged between 10 and 27.

The group boogied to a variety of hip-hop, R'n'B and dance tracks on a specially-constructed stage behind Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre in Pegasus Road.

Kelly Pointer, Summer with Showtime choreographer, said: "The girls just worked brilliantly as a group. The stuff we got out of them was really good and I am very proud of them."

The event was organised to promote black history in Blackbird Leys, and formed part of the estate's 50th anniversary celebrations.

An exhibition of newspaper cuttings on display told the story of the estate's first black settlers to the present day.

Visitors also got the chance to sample traditional Caribbean food, African crafts and experience face painting.

Ella Keaton, of Bluebell Court in Greater Leys, took her two daughters to the event and said: "I think they should have more events like this around the estate because there is not really a lot to do for the younger children."
