AN Oxfordshire soldier has died following a forklift truck accident at an air base in Iraq.
Sgt Mark Stansfield, 32, of Forsythia Close, Bicester, was seriously injured while carrying out security checks at a supply point to Basra Air Station base when the accident happened.
He was airlifted to Britain, but later died.
Sgt Stansfield was serving in the country with 32 Close Support Squadron, UK Logistic Battalion, based at Dalton Barracks near Abingdon.
He was described as "a first class soldier" with a "bright career ahead" by Ministry of Defence chiefs.
Sgt Stansfield's wife Joanne, who he married in St Lucia at Christmas, was pregnant and the soldier was due to return home on leave the day after last week's accident.
