I would like to say sorry to the cyclist I shouted at in Woodstock Road, Oxford, on Wednesday night at 10pm.

There is no excuse for raised voices so I apologise.

However, I hope the cyclist listened to what I was trying to say. The cyclist was riding on the pavement then, with no warning, suddenly joined the road without looking. I was driving closely behind and fortunately there was no on-coming traffic so I could get round.

If that had not been the case, there would have been a real risk of an accident. The cyclist also had no lights.

This is not an anti-cyclist letter - indeed, in some measure, I was the selfish person for making a journey that I could have cycled instead.

Most cyclists are very careful, but please, could all on two wheels try to observe some of the most basic aspects of the Highway Code? Even the most alert and careful motorist could get caught up in an accident due to reckless cycling, and although not to blame, would probably shoulder significant guilt - "if only, what if, could I have swerved more?"

If the cyclist contacts me via the Oxford Mail, I might even buy cycle light batteries.

Please use lights, and above all else, before joining any road (and especially a main one), check there are no vehicles approaching.
