Franco Cheung was left feeling absolutely fabulous when this photograph of Oxford's South Park at sunset bagged a prestigious competition.

Mr Cheung, who lives and works in Oxford, was so taken aback by the beauty of the park on a chilly March morning he captured the moment at sunrise as part of the Postcards from the Park competition, launched by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund earlier this year.

The competition challenged thousands of people across the UK to capture what they most appreciated about their local park.

The competition was judged by actress Joanna Lumley, celebrated photographer Mike McCartney - brother of ex-Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney - and Damien Demolder, editor of Amateur Photographer magazine.

Mr Cheung, who won the South East category of the competition, said: "I'm delighted to have won this competition.

"South Park is located in between my home and my workplace - I pass it every day on foot. It's a beautiful park with many big trees and is a vantage point offering excellent views of the the old Oxford city.

"The photo was taken in late March - the best time of year year to enjoy a sunset scene - when the sun was just right behind the city."

He recently went to the Mile End Arts Pavilion in London to see his photograph framed and exhibited.

Oxford and its dreaming spires has been the backdrop for a thousand picture postcard images, but the humble local park in spring proved a winner in this instance.

Heritage Lottery fund manager Sheena Vick said: "People are passionate about their parks and this competition really illustrated why we want everyone to have access to a local park they can be proud of, with plenty of opportunities for fun, exercise and enjoyment of beautiful things.

"That's why we continue to invest so much lottery players' money in them, helping them to be more attractive and safer places to be."
