There is so much more to Spain than Rioja, with lots of great value wines to choose from all over this constantly-improving country. These fruit-filled wines are a real pleasure to drink and will compliment a host of foods.
The Spain Mixed Case costs £72 and includes three bottles each of
Castillo Perelada Roc 2006, Catalunya: From the foothills of the Pyrenees in north-east Spain, this is a mixture of Muscat and the local Xarello grape. There's an intense aroma and fine, floral tropical fruit flavours with a delightful hint of orange.
La Copa Garnacha 2005, Campo de Borja: White pepper and spice abound in this richly coloured wine with flavours of raspberry and cherry. This excellent ripe wine goes extremely well with light meat dishes, pasta or roasted vegetables.
Miralmonte 2005, Toro: From the area of Toro, to the west of Madrid, this wine is made from the tinta de toro grape - the local name for tempranillo. Packed with full, ripe fruit and flavours of blackcurrant it is a great match for stews and casseroles.
Pata Negra Gran Reserva 1999, Valdepenas: This Gran Reserva is the top wine from Bodegas Los Llanos and, like the best Riojas, it has been aged in oak barrels for several years to bring out its soft, mellow feel. Full of spicy vanilla flavours and a perfect match for roast lamb.
