Fears have been raised about teenagers speeding in Bicester to "honour" two young crash victims.

Bicester Town Council leader Debbie Pickford told a meeting on Tuesday she had heard rumours races were being organised in tribute to James McCabe, 21, and Adam Davis, 19.

The pair were killed last month when their Peugeot 205 left Middleton Stoney Road and crashed into a tree.

A group of youngsters had gathered at the scene to watch the men drive and Thames Valley Police officers seized mobile phone videos of the crash.

Car enthusiast group Cruise Bicester later organised a slow 200-vehicle procession past the scene in tribute.

Miss Pickford said: "I am very concerned reading in the newspapers that there's such an organisation called Cruise.

"Is this true that there's a group of people who set up races and hero-ise them?

"If it is, it should be very unwelcome. The local talk of it was a lot of people were racing around the town in honour."

Cruise Bicester denied any involvement in illegal racing.

Bicester's police inspector Tom Brooks, who was at the meeting to provide a general update on policing in the town, stressed it was too early to speculate on the causes of last month's crash.

He said he had not heard of a cruise group in Bicester but was aware of people meeting up on industrial estates to swap tips on cars.

He said: "I have not come across street racing or anything like that here.

"There is a danger - not speaking about any specific jobs - with the whole youth culture of doing bizarre things and getting them on the Internet.

"I don't get the sense that particular incident was related to any advertised event.

"If you get a sense, as local councillors, that there's a real concern please address it to me.

"I think we need to build a picture to see how big the problem is and try to tackle it proportionately."

Matt Smith, a member of Cruise Bicester, said the group would never organise a road race.

The 23-year-old from Launton said: "The whole thing about us racing is untrue.

"If people have done that between themselves that's up to them, but it's nothing to do with Cruise Bicester. We would not allow that to go on.

"Cruise Bicester is basically us at Homebase, parked up, talking about cars - not driving around town. We don't set up races at all."

Earlier this month Bicester town councillors backed plans to extend a 50mph limit close to the scene of the crash at the junction with Howes Lane.

The county council is also proposing speed-activated flashing signs and road warning markings.

An inquest into the deaths of Mr McCabe, of Hemingway Drive, and Mr Davis, of Oxlip Leyes, is to be held.
