Sixsecurity cameras in Abingdon are to be decommissioned as part of a cost cutting drive.
The move has "disappointed" a top police officer who says it could hamper the drive to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour.
But the Vale of White Horse District Council, which undertook a review of the town's 28 CCTV cameras, says public safety will not be compromised. The locations of the six cameras have not been revealed on grounds of security.
In a separate move, two new cameras may be installed at the Neave Mews flats development in the town centre as part of a "planning gain" agreement with developers. The council has earmarked seven cameras out of a total of 33 for closure, six in Abingdon and one in Wantage. It described them as "operationally redundant."
Police say cameras have helped make the Vale one of the safest areas in the country. Chief Insp Phil Littlechild said: "Some of the sites have had new buildings and foliage growth since their initial installation that seriously reduces the view being received so it makes good sense to review. However, there are some sites we would prefer to be retained. I am disappointed that this action is being considered."
