A new survey has revealed Oxfordshire is leading the broadband revolution in the South East of England.

According to figures released by BT, Oxfordshire has the third highest take-up of broadband of any English county.

More than 45 per cent of homes and businesses in the county are using the high speed technology, with 125,000 connections.

Mike Galvin, BT South East regional director, said: "The success of broadband is a demonstration of the innovative nature of businesses and people in these areas.

"Broadband is making a major contribution to the economic success of businesses across the South East as businesses use it to find new markets.

"While households capitalise on the limitless abilities of the Internet for education, entertainment and shopping."

Broadband has become one of the fastest growing consumer products in recent years, overtaking the growth in televisions, CD players and mobile phones.

The company says it now has more than 1.4 million broadband connections in the South East alone, and 8.8 million across the UK - smashing its target of five million by 2006.
