TWO elderly people who died after causing a fatal crash on the M40 by driving their car the wrong way up the road have been named.

John Norton, 80, and Olive Howard, 87, both from High Wycombe, were killed after they smashed their Subaru Forester – which was towing a caravan – headfirst into two other cars near Tetsworth on Monday, October 15.

The 32-year-old driver of a Ford Mondeo, Stuart Richards, was also killed.

Last week Thames Valley Police revealed it had been called five days before when the Subaru was involved in another crash in High Wycombe.

The force has now referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) over the whole incident.

Mr Richards’ family confirmed at the weekend that they are now seeking legal advice over his death and possible financial compensation.

The tragic events unfolded after the elderly pair had been driving south in the fast lane of the northbound carriageway.

Moments later their 4x4 Subaru collided with Mr Richards’ Ford Mondeo and a Ford Focus.

Dashcam footage recorded just before the crash shows panicked drivers swerving into the middle lane to avoid the Forester as it sped up the outside lane at around 4pm.

The busy M40 carriageway was closed for a total of 14 hours while emergency services attended the scene and resurfacing work took place.

The road re-opened the following morning.
