BRAZEN fly-tippers took no notice of a sign warning them about CCTV as they dumped a huge mound of rubbish at an Oxford supermarket.

A pile of rubbish bags, children’s toys and even used nappies has been piled up in the car park of Sainsbury’s in Heyford Hill.

And the culprits unloaded the waste right in front of a warning sign that reads ‘No-fly-tipping here – monitored by CCTV’.

Sainsbury’s, which is responsible for cleaning up the mess on its own land, says it is aware of the issue and is looking at taking 'preventative measures' to stop people dumping waste in future.

A spokesman added: “The area cleared daily."

The Heyford Hill supermarket lies on a busy route off the ring road and A4095, and is about a mile from Oxford’s former ‘super dump’.

The huge area of illegal fly-tipping near Redbridge recycling centre, which contained similar items seen at Sainsbury’s, reached its peak last year before being cleaned up by the council at a cost of £65,000 in late 2017.

Fears were raised after the clean-up in Redbridge and its conversion to a children’s play area that the problem would shift elsewhere, with councillors in Kennington reporting their village had become a target for fly-tippers.

While Oxford City Council is the authority responsible for cracking down on fly-tipping, dumped waste on private land falls to the landowner to clear up.

Oxford City Council, which can investigate fly-tipping on private land, was contacted for comment but has not confirmed whether it has been contacted by the supermarket.
