KEY moments in the history of the John Radcliffe Hospital have been captured in a mural in the hospital's industrial block.

Artist Elizabeth (Zee) Grant, from Kingston Bagpuize, unveiled the new display on Friday which took 10 weeks to complete.

The idea for the mural came when the hospital's old boilers were removed in 2016 as part of the Hospital Energy Project.

Miss Grant, who was approached by the estates team and volunteered her time, was able to work the old boiler commissioning plates from 1973 into the piece along with John Radcliffe himself and an array of science-related illustrations.

She said: “During my initial research I was struck by the description of the boiler as ‘the heart of the hospital’ and used it as inspiration for the basis of my design."

Head of operational estates, Claire Hennessy, said: “Watching Zee work on this has been a revelation – slowly the work has been revealed and unfolded before our eyes.

“We asked her to do us a mural which would include the commissioning plates and cheer up a rather boring wall, in a busy corridor."

Oxford-based artist Annie Sloan donated a supply of her Chalk Paint®, and the Oxford Hospitals Charity contributed towards the project.

Joe Baker, from the Oxford Hospitals Charity, said: “It was great to be able to help this project come to life and bring some colour and fun to this area. We are really grateful to all those who volunteered their time and donated the materials.”

Annie Sloan added: “I am extremely proud to support this project and get behind our local NHS which does amazing work for us all."
