A GIRL and young woman were punched by a jogger in an 'unprovoked' attack in Abingdon.

Police have appealed for witnesses of the assault, which happened in Wootton Road near John Mason School.

The two victims, aged 16 and 18, were walking along and moved out of the jogger's way as he passed.

He then punched them both without any provocation, police said.

The attack happened at about 9.15am on Monday last week (September 24).

Launching an appeal for witnesses today, police described the man as white with tanned skin, about 5ft 8ins tall and aged between 40 and 50.

He had black, greying hair, wore a green puffa-style jacket and was carrying a water bottle in his pocket.

Investigating officer PC Matthew Wheeler, based at Abingdon police station, said: "This was an unprovoked attack and we would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward."

Anyone with information can call 101 quoting reference 43180292423, Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or report details online.

It is the second police witness appeal about violent crime in Abingdon in as many days.

Yesterday the force released details about a 'nasty attack' in Bath Street, which is being treated as attempted murder.

Police believe the Bath Street victim was known to the attacker, however, and there is no suggestion the two incidents are linked.
