Attempted murder in Bath Street, Abingdon

A MAN is in life-threatening condition after a 'nasty' attack in Abingdon police are treating as attempted murder.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack, which took place in Bath Street yesterday.

The 58-year-old man was assaulted at around 8pm close to the junction with Stratton Way.

The attacker, who fled the scene, is described as a white man, aged between mid-40s and 50, with a large build, around 5ft 10ins tall, with short brown hair and clean shaven.

He was dressed in a white short sleeved shirt with stripes across the chest, and dark trousers.

The victim suffered 'significant injuries' to his head and chest and is in Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital in a 'stable but critical condition'.

Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Ali Driver, based at Abingdon police station, said: “This was a nasty attack on the victim who is now in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

“We would like to appeal to anyone who may have seen or heard something, as it happened in a public area where there is a high chance it was seen.

“We believe the victim and offender were together earlier in the evening, and we think they entered Bath Street from Stratton Way before the attack.

"We do not believe that this was a random attack.”
