IN CASE the impressive sideburns failed to give away the era, this smiling photo was snapped in the mid-seventies.

But despite the happy expression on his face, David Sanders was staging an angry protest to stop lorries trundling through his road.

It is an issue that still riles residents now as much as it did back then, in September 1975.

Mr Sanders, who lived in William Street in Headington, created a blockade near his house to stop lorries cutting through to a building site.

He parked two cars side-by-side to block the road, and told the Oxford Mail he was 'frightened' the vibrations from the large vehicles would further worsen the subsidence his house had suffered.

The two-day protest ended when he was threatened with police action.
