FROM vibrant installations and colourful signs to finding the beauty in everyday objects, Camera Club went looking for ‘art in unusual places’ this week.

Many member’s submissions for the theme featured sculptures which turned up in all manner of weird and wonderful locations.

Some of our favourites included a memorial dedicated to the women’s land army from the Second World War in Clochan, Moray, Scotland, snapped by Lesley Murray and a wire female figure posed among the grape vines at Bothy Vineyard, near Abingdon, which was taken by Roy Pyniger.

We also loved Melanie Burns’ shot of a tree seemingly overflowing with massive coloured pencils from an opened zip in Vendome, France.

One of the oddest, meanwhile, was a flower pot figure Steve Clarke came across sat on a sofa.

Creativity was also to be found in hand-crafted signs. We particularly liked Julia Johnson-Fry’s image of a painted sheep sign warning of potential woolly hazards to motorists in Scotland as well as a notice for a ‘Lego Cove’ spelled out entirely in the children’s toy, complete with added Lego figures taken by Adele Hookway.

Plenty of art could also be found in everyday objects. Among those that stood out was image of the moon shining through Pam Denton’s flower bathroom window and the artistry of an Italian sfogatelle pastry by Emma Bourton.

Art in nature could also be seen in the intricate pattern of a spider's web at Port Meadow by Nathan Jennings McCarthy.

Finally, no collection of images of art in unusual places would be complete without an appearance by the Headington shark so we were pleased to see Tricia Perkins’ shot of the once controversial figure.

Sharing the image on the Oxford Mail Camera Club Facebook page earlier this week she commented: “Had to be done!”

The unique 25ft fibreglass artwork has become an Oxford institution since it was installed by Oxford Mail columnist Bill Heine without planning permission in August 1986 in the middle of the night.

Next week’s theme is ‘autumn’.
