CRUMBLING stone walls in Headington were smoothed over with the help of a £300 grant from Oxford City Council.
Stadhampton-based stonemason Brian Hawkins carried out the works in several lanes and side streets in April 1976.
Pictured smartly dressed in a shirt, jumper and matching bobble hat, next to a pile of eroded stone rubble, it looked as though he had his work cut out with a pile of eroded stone rubble.
The works were being pushed for by conservation group Friends of Old Headington, but the council's contribution covered less than a third of the estimated £1,000 price tag.
The group asked residents to donate what they could to help pay for the repairs.
