RESIDENTS of a quiet cul-de-sac complained that lorries serving a meat storage depot were 'trapping them in their own homes' in November 1974.
The elderly people living next to Towers and Co in Stephen Road, Headington, said 'juggernaut lorries' were blocking the pavements and often half the road as well.
They feared the unloading vehicles were dangerous for oncoming traffic and cars parked on other side of the road.
Phyllis Wormald, who had problems with arthritic hips, had only managed to get down the road once in the whole year.
Another residents in her 80s said she was so frightened at having to go in to the road to pass the lorries that she was having to take a detour around Cuckoo Lane to get to the shops.
Manager of the company Mr A.H.Barret agreed it was a 'most unfortunate' problem.
But he said he always tried to ensure drivers left enough room either at the front or back of the lorry for pedestrians to get past.
