CHRISTMAS shoppers were warned of a huge rise in thefts from parked cars during the festive season in 1987.
Police in Oxford became so concerned that some officers were taken off all duties to concentrate on beating the festive thieves.
Hundreds of warning leaflets were spread around in the city's car parks.
Checks were made for cars where property could be seen to ensure vehicles were locked.
Raids were being reported 'all over the place' including at the Westgate multi-storey car park, Peartree park and ride, Westminster Way, Botley, St Ebbe's, Kingston Road, New Cross Road, Headington and in North Oxford.
In most attacks the rear windows of cars were smashed in and items stolen from back seats and from the parcel shelf.
