Summer has gone, the nights are drawing in and there’s a definite nip in the air. But that doesn’t mean festival season is over– it is just moving indoors.

With almost 30 bands and DJ acts playing under one roof, Oxford’s If Not Now When? all-dayer offers all the fun of a festival in a field... but without the mud, the weather and the hiking between stages. And it takes place in the heart of East Oxford meaning a comfortable bed, not a damp sleeping bag, awaits you at the end of the night.

Leaning towards the rock and indie end of the spectrum, but with electronica and plenty of leftfield offerings, the line-up is stellar. It sees punchy DIY alternative-rockers Rolo Tomassi topping the bill alongside Gender Roles, Cousin Kula and local treasures Cameron AG, Chad Valley, Cassels, Salvation Bill, Lucy Leave, Premium Leisure and drumming, singing leftfield artist Despicable Zee – aka Zahra Haji Fath Ali Tehrani of Oxford’s praise-worthy Young Women’s Music Project.

Also up are Robert Sotelo, Bug Prentice, Witching Waves, Rosie Caldecott, Death and the Penguin, Slonk, Slumb Party, Fancy Dress Party, Frauds, Dignan Porch, Land Girls, Worry, and the floral-sounding Night Flowers, Sweet Williams and No Violet.

“It’s going to be a full day of great rock, indie and alternative music from around the UK,” says promoter Aiden Canaday of Divine Schism, which is organising the event with fellow promoters Idiot King.

“It’s the end of the summer but it’s nice to carry on that spirit.

“It’s mostly guitar and electronic music with a few tangents, and is all stuff we like – with some bands who have never played in Oxford before.”

The action takes place on three stages all inside the East Oxford Community Centre in Princes Street.

“It’s a lovely venue and accessible to all,” says Aiden. “It’s a nice environment and the stages are close together – and it will be open to all ages before 9pm too, so we hope to see children, parents and grandparents during the day.”

There will be food from Taste Tibet and stylish threads from Eagle Vintage in Jericho. They even have their own pale ale from North Hinksey’s Tap Social.

The event comes to a close with Room 101 DJs playing new metal and rock until 2am.

This will be the second instalment of If Not Now When?. Aiden says the idea came from staging the city’s successful Oxjam event two years ago.

It comes as Witney stages its Asylum Sounds all-dayer and a month before East Oxford’s multi-venue Ritual Union festival, which sees Gaz Coombes, Ghostpoet, Jane Weaver and Nadine Shah hitting the Cowley Road.

“There are lots of all-dayers going on around the country,” says Aiden, known locally through his membership of Oxford alt-folk band The Cooling Pearls.

“But we wanted to put on more of an alternative, indie DIY festival. We are bringing new and exciting music to Oxford.”

The line-up is a dream list for Aiden, who says: “We had a list of bands we wanted to bring to town and whittled them down but also got lucky too.”He says he is thrilled to be welcoming Rolo Tomassi to town. Eva And James Spence’s ‘mathcore’ grunge-rock band command huge respect among rock fans for their dynamic live shows and are the perfect act to top off a respectably noisy line-up.

Also causing waves are appearances by local indie-pop star Cameron AG and Oxford synth-pop artist Chad Valley – aka Hugo Manuel, who is fresh from a North American tour.

“He has been playing around the world so it’s great to have him back here playing If Not Now When?

“If people want to be part of an exciting, very inclusive all-day music event with a lot of new bands and artists playing a mix of rock, indie, grunge, emo and elelectronica, this is the place to be!”
