AS FAR as radical protesters go, Buddhist monks are not normally the main culprits.

But in April 1979, a group of 12 of them passed through Upper Heyford's USAF base.

They waved banners, chanted and played Buddhist drums as part of a 500-mile march to protest against nuclear weapons.

The group of Ban the Bomb demonstrators marched from Aldermaston to Faslane in Scotland.

Their trip also included a night at St Edburg's Hall, Bicester, and a march through Banbury.
