A NEW exhibition on monks' experience of the First World War is being launched by Oxford University tomorrow.

Running from 1pm - 5pm at SJE Arts in Iffley Road, the ‘Wartime at an Oxfordshire Monastery’ exhibition tells the First World War story of a community of monks.

The concert and arts venue, based at private halls St Stephen’s House used to house the monks, in a neo-gothic cloister and church, during the war.

Focusing on individuals associated with the monastery during wartime, the lottery-funded exhibition features a local woodcarver, organist and communities of local nuns.

The Oxford ‘hidden heritage’ site also explains the contributions the monks made to the First World War, both at home and abroad.

Around 100 local schoolchildren, volunteers, teachers and academics were involved in the project, led by local social historian Dr Annie Skinner, with Dr Serenhedd James.
