FAMILIES in Abingdon will be able to make use of services at a centre saved by the community from this month.

Following an open day on Saturday, it has now been revealed the former South Abingdon Children’s Centre will offer everything from stay and play sessions for parents to healthy eating classes for adults from Monday, September 17.

A new lease was signed last month for the Caldecott Close building, which closed almost eighteen months ago due to county council cuts which saw dozens of centres across the county shut. Behind the revival is a community group called Abingdon Carousel, set up to save the centre after services stopped in April 2017.

It has secured funding from the county authority at £35,000 as well as £100,000 over three years from the town council.

Now called the Abingdon Carousel Family Centre, it will be offering a variety of services for families, children and vulnerable adults.

Other organisations already lined up to begin working from the centre include Citizens Advice Abingdon, health visitors, the Downs Syndrome Association, Inspiring Minds and Abingdon Carbon Cutters.

The centre will be open five days a week in term-time to start with and from next year organisers plan to run weekend and holiday sessions. Visit abingdoncarousel.org.uk.
