DRIVERS using the A415 between Abingdon and Witney can expect a smooth ride this morning after a six-week closure for gas main repairs.

SGN has been installing a new gas main at Kingston Bagpuize, resulting in major diversions for delivery drivers and residents who use the route.

The A415 Abingdon Road has been shut between its junction with Rectory Lane and the roundabout with Faringdon Road and Witney Road

Last week traders expressed relief after SGN confirmed that work was due to be completed last night.

A spokesman said: “Work on the road surface was expected to be completed last night with the road due to reopen after the evening rush-hour.”

County council spokesman Martin Crabtree said: “SGN are reinstating at the moment.

“However if the tarmac needs curing time then we will allow them to clear the site on Tuesday.”

During the closure period drvers have been forced to divert onto the A420, before heading through villages including Longworth.

Traders said last week they were relieved that the gas main project was due for completion after it started on July 23.

Richard Hikins, ofaward-winning irepair tech, a mobile phone and computer repair shop in Witney, said customers and residents have been frustrated by the closure.

He said traders in the area were concerned that the diversion had been having an adverse effect on their businesses.

SGN spokesman Dan Brown said earlier: “We are investing to reinforce our gas mains to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply to the local area.”
