A TV series based on a fantasy novel about witches set in Oxford is about to be shown on satellite channel Sky.

A Discovery of Witches is based on Deborah Harkness’ bestselling novel A Discovery of Witches.

The series, starring Matthew Goode, 40, as bloodthirsty professor Matthew Clairmont, is due to start on Sky One on September 14.

The contemporary love story is set in a world in which humans share space with the declining species of witches, vampires and daemons.

The series is being made by Cardiff-based Bad Wolf, which is also making a TV version of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials.

The Bad Wolf website said: “Teresa Palmer plays brilliant academic and historian Diana Bishop, a reluctant witch denying her heritage.

“The discovery of a manuscript in Oxford’s Bodleian Library throws her into the heart of a dangerous mystery and into the path of enigmatic geneticist Matthew Clairmont played by Matthew Goode, an ancient vampire hiding dark family secrets.”

Scenes have been shot on location in Oxford, including at Folly Bridge.

Earlier this year Bad Wolf staged casting sessions for extras but did not say which series they were recruiting for.

Novelist Ms Harkness is among the executive producers, along with Jane Tranter, Julie Gardner, Deborah Harkness, Lachlan MacKinnon, Kate Brooke

The directors are Juan Carlos Medina, Alice Troughton, Sarah Walker while the producer is Dominic Barlow.
