A PERSON killed after being hit by a train on an Oxford level crossing has been identified as a man in his 20s.

British Transport Police confirmed the new details about Thursday's incident, also revealing that the man was currently living in the city.

Emergency services pronounced the man dead at Tuckwells Level Crossing in Grandpont just after 8am, ahead of a series of cancellations and delays between Didcot Parkway and Oxford.

The Oxford Mail can also reveal that the private crossing has an extremely high risk rating and is passed by 270 trains a day travelling at speeds of up to 90mph.

It is 'user-worked', meaning the onus is on the person using the path to check for oncoming trains.

The man's family have been informed but BTP would not provide any further information about how he came to be on the tracks.

In a statement on Thursday they said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
