ONE of Oxfordshire's wackiest races returns today.

The annual Bampton Donkey Derby will take place on Sandfords Field in the village from 2pm.

As well as the donkey races – where the jockeys are all children – there will be bric-a-brac stalls, skittles, Aunt Sally and crockery smashing.

The event, run by the team behind Bampton Shirt Race, has been going 50 years.

SPAJERS – Society for the Preservation of Ancient Junketing – founded the event in 1969 to raise money to pay for the village old folks’ annual summer day trip to the coast, while giving villagers young and old the chance to have fun.
