Neighbours are celebrating after winning a two-year campaign to get a new postbox after their East Oxford post office closed.

The post box in Glanville Road was removed when the post office closed two years ago - leaving people with a long trek to send their mail.

And it has taken two years of campaigning to get a new one installed at the Cowley Road junction with Milton Road.

Saj Malik, Cowley Marsh city councillor, collected nearly 300 signatures on a petition asking for a new post box.

Mr Malik said: "It is a vital service to the community, particularly to the elderly people who live nearby.

"The nearest postbox is right on the other side of Oxford Road, or at the bottom of Marston Street, which is way down.

"It is not just a few streets that are affected, it is a lot of people, and I know the people in the sheltered housing at John Cowley Court are very happy."

Olive Husselbee, who lives in Glanville Road and walks with the aid of sticks, said she was delighted the postbox had been reinstated.

She said: "It will be a tremendous help for those of us who use birthday cards and letters in this electronic age.

"Even those of us with limited mobility will be able to use it, instead of having to wait until somebody can give you a lift in the car."

Gillian Cuttoral, John Cowley Court warden, said she was glad there was a new postbox.

But she was disappointed her elderly residents would have to cross the busy Cowley Road to use it.

She said: "It is a very big road and a very fast road, and the residents are not very quick on their feet."
