Arthur Nockels, former headmaster of Chipping Norton School and the first president of Chipping Norton Rugby Club, has died.
Mr Nockels was born in Scarborough and won a scholarship to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, from Scarborough High School to read French and German.
His time at Oxford was interrupted by the Second World War, when he served with the Friends' Ambulance Service, a Quaker organisation.
He graduated after the war, and started his career as a teacher of modern languages in Bingley in West Yorkshire.
After a spell as headmaster at a secondary school in Somerset, he moved to Chipping Norton in 1964.
A keen sportsman himself, playing rugby for Christi College in his time at Oxford, he played a major role in the reformation of Chipping Norton Rugby Club.
A Humanist funeral for Mr Nockels was held at Banbury Crematorium on Thursday, August 23.
