Police were called to Marsh Park, Cowley, early today after residents reported hearing what they thought were gunshots.
Six separate calls were made to police, the first at 3.20am with more coming in until about 4.15am, reporting loud bangs coming from the park.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered it was loud fireworks being set off - but were unable to find the perpetrators.
Thames Valley Police spokesman Toby Shergold said: "This is pretty antisocial and the loudness of the fireworks was such that people were concerned there were firearms being used.
"It must have been quite scary for local residents to hear his at such a early hour of the morning."
Anyone who has any information relating to the incident is asked to call 08458 505505.
