It will be a surprise if most Memory Lane readers don't recognise at least some of the smartly-dressed gentlemen pictured above.

David Munday, who supplied the photograph, writes: "They came from all walks of life and had so many interesting stories to tell.

"I don't know what I said to them, but have you ever seen so many smiling faces?"

They formed the men's group at Collinwood Road United Reformed Church at Risinghurst, Oxford. The picture was taken at the 25th anniversary dinner on April 26, 1980.

Mr Munday, of Wharton Road, Headington, tells me: "The group was founded in 1955 and ran for 31 years until 1986.

"I know many of the men will be recognised by your readers. All played some part in the life of Collinwood Road, known as Collinwood Road Congregational Church until 1972."

The dinner was only part of the anniversary festivities. Mr Munday writes: "Celebrations continued over the weekend when the men conducted two services in the church and formed their own choir of 40 voices, ably supported by members of the Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir, great friends of ours.

"Under the chairmanship of the Rev Tom Stiff, I had the pleasure of being the group's secretary and treasurer for 20 years. Happy days."

Some readers might wonder why no women were present. They had their own group called Women's Own.
