Residents and councillors are fuming over a blunder with signs around the Oxford United stadium, which they say is causing parking havoc for residents.

For a second weekend, subcontractors working for Oxfordshire County Council failed on Saturday to change adjustable signs informing fans about United's match day parking restrictions.

Councillor Bob Timbs, said: "Unless action is taken it will become a huge problem because people will soon discover they can park for free in Blackbird Leys and Littlemore."

The free-for-all parking angered residents at United's first home game of the season against Forest Green on August 11. The county council promised to look into it, but two weeks later it was still the same.

Under the permit parking scheme, permit holders in about 15 roads in Blackbird Leys, and the majority of roads in Greater Leys, pay £10 a year to park during events held at the stadium.

Adjustable signs are supposed to inform visitors the roads are for permit holders only during event hours - normally 1pm until 6pm on Saturday afternoons, and 6pm until 10.30pm for evening games.

Councillor John Tanner, said: "It has got to get sorted immediately before people really become affected - and it can really distress some of them. The county council ought to give a rebate for everyone who has paid money because they are getting a worse service. Its adding insult to injury."

But Ian Hudspeth, the man in charge of County Hall's parking policy, said the problem had been brought to his attention and the signs should be in place for the September 1 match against Halifax Town.

He said: "As a result of representations it was agreed the signing should be altered to allow for regular enforcement of parking caused by Sunday car boot sales, as well as football or other events on other days.

"It is for this reason that we've had to seek approval to change the signs.

"The signs should go up after the Bank Holiday weekend."

Signs are also altered to inform people of restrictions in place during Sunday morning car boot sales at the stadium's car park.

Mr Hudspeth, added: "To give some relief to residents from the effects of car boot sales, we have utilised the existing signing on Sundays during the football season."
