A WOMAN from Abingdon will climb Mount Snowdon partially blindfolded to fund a three-month volunteering project in Uganda.

Kara Beaumont, 25, will travel to Africa next month with international development organisation Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), as part of the UK government funded International Citizen Service programme.

She will work in partnership with young volunteers from Uganda and the UK and live with a local host family to fully immerse herself into the community.

Before Ms Beaumont leaves for Uganda, she needs to raise £800 for VSO, already doing bake sales and odd jobs to fund her trip she will also be taking on a mammoth task later this month.

She said: "I'll be climbing Mount Snowdon part blindfolded. It is the highest peak in Wales so I am expecting it to be a real challenge. Your support would really mean the world to me and as I blindly struggle my way to the top."

The money she raises will ensure that communities in developing countries continue to benefit from the work of future volunteers.

She said: "I’m really looking forward to travelling to Uganda and getting stuck into my project.

"I’m working on a Livelihoods project, so I’m hoping I can help young people to get the skills they need for gainful employment.

"Part of the mission is to inspire young people in the UK and Uganda to become more active and empowered within their communities, so I expect there will be much to learn and share.

"I’m most excited about meeting the Ugandan volunteers I'll be working alongside, as it'll be so interesting to find out what life is like for young people there."

The citizen service programme allows young people aged 18-35 to make a valuable contribution to sustainable development projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Ms Beaumont said: "I’ve already raised £200 from selling macaroons at work, car boot sales, and various other odd jobs.I’m hoping that my mountain climb will help me to raise more towards my £800 target."
