FOOTBALLERS from two teams travelled to Poland to take part in a town twinning football tournament.

This year's team was a combination of players from both Chesterton and Launton Football Clubs - the winners and runners up of last year's Peter Flynn Twinning Tournament.

Derek Kidd, manager of Launton Football Club, chose the players to take part in the trip, organised by the Bicester Twinning Association.

The 14 players who made up Bicester Twinning Football Club, visited Czernichow, Bicester's link town, for six days at the beginning of the month.

Bicester Twinning Football Club won three out of their four games, plus a three-team tournament on the Saturday, which consisted of the Bicester team and two Polish teams.

Mark Appleton, manager of Chesterton Football Club, who also went on the trip, said: "The football was good. They had played and defeated the local side, LKS Zar Miedzybrdzie Bialskie, twice.

"And we heard that before the third game on Sunday, the local priest during the church service asked everyone to pray for a victory against the visitors from Bicester."

The annual football tournament is in honour of Peter Flynn, a former Bicester Town player who was a referee and supporter of the club for more than 30 years.

Mr Flynn, who has Alzheimer's disease, was also a long-term member of the Bicester twinning association. He now lives in a nursing home.

A trophy in his honour was set up by his wife Jackie.

The Polish team will return to Bicester next year.
