THIS eerie collection by Abingdon photographer Ashley Good adds a sense of menace and atmosphere to the skeletal exhibits of one of Oxford’ most famous museums.

The images, all taken on Polaroid, are part of an ongoing project called Osseous, which explores the skeletons, skulls and bones that form part of the treasure trove of specimens on display at Oxford University Museum of Natural History.

Stark, almost bleached forms have been shot on Polaroid Originals B&W 600 film, a high contrast black and white instant film.

The deep blacks and crisp whites highlighting the contrast between the subjects and the background.

Mr Good, who is originally from Glasgow but now lives Abingdon, said he has a deeply personal connection to each image.

He explained: “For me Polaroid photography is a warmer, more human photography.

"When I press the button on my camera I can feel every gear and mechanism moving.

“When the photo is ejected I warm it in my pocket to help it develop. I have a symbiotic relationship with each photo.”

Several of the shots have undergone a quasi-sepia tone process whereby the shots are intentionally over heated during development.

The frames of each Polaroid have also been removed, revealing the skeletal structure of the image itself, thematically linking the image and the medium.

Excess negative is displayed, lending the images a decayed, distressed feel.

The internationally exhibited photographer, primarily uses Polaroid film in vintage cameras in his work.

He said: “The reinvigoration of Polaroid has been heartening to see, and I hope that they can continue to make their film as long as possible”

The museum’s digital engagement officer, Scott Billings said: “The museum collections are often a springboard for artistic interpretation and Ashley’s Polaroid images offer us a unique and atmospheric vision of nature, where the strange forms of skeletal material become brooding and at times even menacing.”
