A SMOKE detector saved a house from serious damage after a firework flew through an open window.

There were four adults and two children in the property in Cuckoo Close, Caversfield, when the blaze began.

A smoke detector on the landing of the property alerted the family to the fire in an upstairs bedroom, last Thursday.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue received the call at 10pm. Two fire engines from Bicester attended. It is thought the stray firework had come from a nearby party.

Crew manager Russell Hurle checked the house and made sure the fire had been put out properly.

He said: "The point here is the smoke detector saved the day. It was on the landing and was in working order.

"It's not every day that a firework flies in through an open window. The family acted responsibly and quickly, and did the smart thing by calling the fire service."

The damage caused included burnt curtains and blinds, and smoke damage to the walls and carpets.

No one at the house was available for comment.
