AN OXFORD musician is bringing his unique brand of African drumming and poetry to Cafe Tarifa's long-standing open mic nights.

Francis Boua, who aims to 'drum up peace on Earth', has been performing at the Cowley Road night, which takes place every other Thursday.

The Ivory Coast-born 48-year-old - who reads poetry and ‘translates’ it into drumming - is joining a host of other acts organised by Alex Colman at the informal event.

The bar, which describes itself as a 'hidden oasis', has a relaxed vibe and outdoor area and serves food from southern Spain.

No booking is required for those wanting to perform during the sessions, which run from 9pm until 11pm.

Mr Boua, who stresses the role of drumming in wellbeing, fun and spiritualism, said: "Open mic is a very good opportunity to promote African drumming in Oxford and also for local artists to develop their talent.

"African drumming has granted me courage and wisdom to make change. Just believe to achieve.

"I believe in the evocative power of the drums."

He continued: "As I am alive I am using this power to generate peace and prosperity.

"Without peace there is no future and I will make sure that our political leaders understand the message of the drums through poetry and songs.

"That's what drumming up is about."
