George Dumbleton, who has died aged 87, spent much of his life devoted to caring for his wife Cicely.
Mr Dumbleton, who was born in Wendlebury, near Bicester, and lived there all his life, followed his father Albert's footsteps by running the family joinery firm, Dumbleton and Son.
During the Second World War, Mr Dumbleton saw active service with the RAF in North Africa, Italy and France.
In 1945, he returned to Wendlebury and married Cicely, who died two years ago.
Their son George, 53, of Priory Close, Bicester, said: "My father always put others before himself.
"Everybody who spoke to him said he was a perfect gentleman."
He served as chairman of Wendlebury Parish Council and represented Oxfordshire at both rifle and pistol shooting.
