A DECISION on whether to grant permission to build a new secondary school for Oxford will not be made until September, it is understood.

Mary Clarkson, the councillor for Marston, updated residents on the latest Swan School developments at a public meeting this evening.

She said the city council's planners had informed her the application will not go in front of the planning committee until September 5 at the earliest as information on the plan is 'still missing.'

It had initially been thought a decision on the already delayed project would be made in August but this is no longer the case.

Residents who live close to the school's proposed site in Raymund Road, Marston aired their concerns about parking, pollution and the safety of cyclists at the often ill-tempered meeting in St Nicholas' Primary School.

Ms Clarkson, who sits on the planning committee, said she was still undecided on the plan despite fellow ward councillor Mick Haines being vocally opposed.

County Councillor Mark Lygo called on residents to back up their concerns with evidence and concentrate on getting conditions put in place on the application.

But residents hit back saying they didn't want the school built full stop, and implored the River Learning Trust (which will run the school) to look at other sites nearer the new Barton Park estate or expand the nearby Cherwell School instead.

Chief executive Paul James, who was at the meeting, has previously stressed the group is doing 'all it reasonably can' to address concerns.
