AMONG the hundreds of football fans celebrating England’s win against Sweden in Oxford on Saturday was Cowley hit-and-run victim Steven Wanna.

The 21-year-old, who sustained horrific injuries in February 2017 after being hit by a car near Nuneham Courtenay after a night out celebrating his birthday, was determined to be in the city to support the national team as they played for a place in the World Cup semi-finals.

After being kept in a coma for three months to allow his body to heal, the sports fan has spent the past year in rehabilitation relearning how to walk and recovering from brain injuries.

He is currently more than an hour away at a specialist facility in Northamptonshire but made the journey back to Oxford on Saturday to watch the match in George Street.

Armed with an England flag, Mr Wanna and his friends, as well as mum Sandy Mar and sister Susan, cheered Gareth Southgate’s team on as they won a decisive 2-0 victory against the Swedish side.

Before his accident, Ms Mar said her son was an ‘active and sporty boy’ and was always playing football and tennis.

Now, eighteen months after being struck by a car, the former Abingdon and Witney College student is out of a wheelchair and able to walk with the aide of crutches.

Though still unable to play the game he loves, he was all smiles on Saturday as he watched England reach the final four of a World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

England will now face Croatia tomorrow for a place in the final.
