JUST a few decades ago the grand buildings and grounds of Chandlings Prep School were home to a wealthy family from the Middle East, adorned with plush velvet furniture and dazzling chandeliers.

The estate - which even housed a shooting gallery and cinema - has since been given a more practical makeover and transformed into the school with nursery that stands today, surrounded by 60 acres of green spaces, lakes and woodland.

Located between the famous views of Boars Hill and the pretty village of Kennington near Oxford, this year the independent school celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Head Christine Cook said the expansive outdoor space pupils have access to aids their learning greatly.

She said: "Emphasis on outdoor learning really affects the atmosphere, and helps children to focus on getting the academics right.

"It's important the children have fun and have a good time so they are happy and engaged with what they are doing.

"We get great results but children don't feel the pressure, because they're so well prepared.

"There is a really warm and welcoming atmosphere here, the children feel appreciated and at home."

She said the school's academic results had been successful from the start, but this has been underpinned by a plethora of clubs and activities outside class.

Ms Cook added: "We offer more than 60 activities varying from term to term, from pony riding and fencing to really strong drama and music clubs.

"There is something for everyone to find each individual's niche.

"Children enjoy independent learning and are encouraged to be inquisitive and curious."

The school educates children aged two-11 and currently teaches 402 pupils.

Its on-site facilities include an outdoor low ropes course, vegetable garden, a bluebell wood, a bird hide and an indoor swimming pool.

Teaching centres around a core ethos, which Chandlings calls the Knight's Values - based on its school logo.

These are proudly displayed on the school's walls and include phrases such as 'be honest and live with integrity', 'have modesty and humility' and 'be courageous'.
