CCTV images have been released by police after a Jewish centre suffered an anti-Semitic attack.

Offensive notes were placed at the Chabad Student Centre in Cowley Road in the early hours of Saturday, May 19, and a small fire was started.

The images show a man police wish to speak to in relation to the incident.

Investigating officer, detective sergeant George Atkinson of the Investigation Hub in Oxford, said: “We would like to speak to the man pictured as we believe he may have important information regarding this incident.

“Thankfully no significant damage was caused and no one was hurt.

“I am appealing for the man in these images to come forward, or if anyone recognises him to make contact.”

The attack came just days before an unknown substance scare in which a white powder, later revealed to be talcum powder, was thrown at the centre.

Emergency services shut Alma Place near the centre as a precaution but this incident is no longer being investigated by police.

City leaders condemned the attacks as ‘disgusting’ and rallied to pledge their support for the centre.

Rabbi Eli Brackman said he believed the attacks were intended to spread panic and fear but promised not to be deterred by ‘displays of hate’.

The attacks come amid growing reports of anti-Semitic behaviour and attacks nationally with the Community Security Trust revealing earlier this year that hate incidents in the UK had reached record levels.

Staff and worshippers at the Oxford synagogue have been on high alert in recent weeks due to the escalating national situation.

Security Officer Sarah Montagu told the Oxford Mail it had seen incidents in the past year that would never have been seen in the five or six years previous.
