For more than 50 years Oxford has been one of the UK’s most prolific musical hotbeds, playing host to some remarkable landmarks in pop history.

For a population of 150,000, the city consistently punches above its weight when it comes to stand out moments, with highlights ranging from a fab four on the cusp of worldwide mania, to the first performance by the modern era’s defining band.

As the third Common People in Oxford gets underway, we’ve put together Oxford’s top 10 music moments, with help from our friends at Oxford music monthly Nightshift.

1) David Bowie at Oxford New Theatre, 1973. Two shows played one week before his final Ziggy Stardust show.

2) The Beatles at Carfax Assembly Rooms, 1963. The Beatles’ only live appearance anywhere in the county of Oxfordshire – tickets were six shillings in advance.

3) The Stone Roses at Oxford Polytechnic, 1989. A classic date on the Roses 1989 tour with Ride’s Mark Gardener and Andy Bell in attendance.

4) Ride’s first Oxford headline show at The Jericho Tavern, 1989. Oxford’s finest close the set with The Beatles’ Tomorrow Never Knows.

5) On A Friday’s first gig at The Jericho Tavern in 1986. The band soon to be called Radiohead played Club Avocado on August 4, paving their way to global success.

6) BBC Radio 1 Sound City in Oxford, 1997, featuring Embrace, Travis, Sleeper, Gene, Dubstar and loads more top acts and DJs at venues across the city including Oxford Brookes Student Union and The Zodiac.

7) Foals at Truck Festival in 2007. Splitting the beams of Truck’s Barn, Foals played one of their best ever performances.

8) The White Stripes at The Point, 2001 – shortly before they explode to worldwide fame.

9) Stornoway at the Sheldonian, 2009 – the first proper band to play the historic venue, and a show that sealed their reputation as a towering folk-pop band.

10) Radiohead headline a homecoming show at South Park. Beck, Sigur Rós and Supergrass also appear at the event where Radiohead play three encores ending in a hastily organised Creep.
