FINAL preparations are being made for the May Morning celebrations with a number of road closures set to be in place until 9am.

The traditional celebrations will fall on a Tuesday and the road closures that commuters will have to deal with have been revealed.

Oxford Mail:

High Street - from The Plain to east of junction with King Edward Street, Longwall Street from High Street to Holywell Street, Rose Lane, Merton Street and Queen's Lane at its junction with High Street will all be closed from 2am to 9am on May 1.

But Broad Street, where some of the celebrations including morris dancing will take place, will not be closed to traffic and members of the public are warned to watch out for cars.

A list of pubs and cafes set to open throughout the night and into the early hours for breakfast and alcohol has also been released.

Tick Tock Cafe in Cowley Road and Jimbob's Baguettes will both be open from midnight while The Cape of Good Hope will open its doors at 4am.

The Turf Tavern, The Wig and Pen, Chequers and Angel and Greyhound will all open at 5am.

As revealed in Saturday's Oxford Mail, a new crowd management system will be introduced following a review into the crowd surge that caused distress for revellers a year ago.

One-way channels will be created on the bridge to ensure the crowd keeps moving and stewards and signs will be in place to direct people to designated viewing areas.

Last year's record crowd of 27,000 is not likely to be matched until May Morning falls on a weekend but the council said it wanted to introduce the measures in preparation for the years ahead.
