A SUPERMARKET turned pink over the weekend, as part of efforts to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Staff at the Tesco Metro in Cowley Road, Oxford, donned pink wigs, scarves, hats and anything else they could find, for the fundraiser and to boost awareness of the Race for Life events later this year.

The Oxford store also used the fundraising effort to hand over £2,766 worth of donations to the Oxford Soup Kitchen – the venture run by Icolyn ‘Ma’ Smith for the homeless.

The donation included sleeping bags, rucksacks, flasks, boots and socks and other items paid for with donations from customers.

Tesco community champion Pat Green said: “Customers really supported the Tesco Turns Pink weekend. Many of them also shared stories about members of their families who were affected by cancer.”

She added: “When Ma Smith and the volunteers saw the donation to the homeless, they had tears in their eyes.”
