The recent floods threw up many stories of emergency staff, volunteers and neighbours helping out those worst affected.

The "Blitz spirit" became a bit of a hackneyed phrase over the week but it was accurate and we have paid tribute to just a few of those: the firefighters whose own houses were under water who went out to do their jobs was just typical.

And how nice it is to learn of the actions of Shah-Nawaz Khan, Jack Hayle and his younger brother Sam.

Young people get a bad rep these days even if they are just hanging around on a street corner not actually doing anything. Their very presence, along with scare stories about what a minority of them get up to, is worrying for the elderly particularly.

But Shah-Nawaz, Jack and Sam have hopefully gone some to redressing the balance.

Instead of sitting back, they went out of their way to help some of West Oxford's older generation to get out of their flood-threatened homes and took provisions to those who stayed.

Not content with that they helped sandbag one of the banks until midnight.

Sure it was probably a bit of an adventure for them but we join with those in West Oxford to commend these community-spirited young men.
